Season 2 Episode 16 | You Made Me Smile (why appreciating the little things matters)

The latest episode of The 3 Minute Pause Podcast launches on Wednesday October 28th. Come back then to listen.

Episode Summary

You're watching the clock, thinking about the next thing you need to do, getting frustrated with the person in front of you who's taking too long. Someone needs to hurry up. Someone needs to move. You've got places to be, and right now, nothing matters quite as much as getting there. And then you catch yourself doing something you probably wouldn't be proud to admit out loud: in that moment, your time matters more than everyone else's.

And yet, most of us don't think of ourselves as people who put ourselves ahead of everyone else. We think of ourselves as considerate, thoughtful, and kind. We hold doors open, help people when they need it, and appreciate it when someone does something thoughtful for us. So why is it that, when we're in a hurry, those same people can become obstacles in our way? Our own urgency can make it surprisingly difficult to consider what someone else might need. Sometimes, all it takes to shift that perspective is for another person to offer us a small act of kindness. A stranger gives way in a crowded car park, and suddenly, we're reminded that we're sharing this world with other people, each caught up in their own lives.

Here's the interesting part: small acts of kindness can create a ripple effect that reaches far beyond the original gesture. We receive an unexpected smile, someone makes room for us in a queue, or a person we love notices we're having a difficult day and makes us a cup of tea. These moments can leave us feeling seen, cared for, and more connected to the people around us. And that feeling can inspire us to offer the same consideration to someone else. Practising gratitude in everyday life isn't just about recognising what we're thankful for; it's also about noticing the people and gestures that make ordinary days feel a little less ordinary.

But appreciating the little things in life doesn't have to mean waiting for someone else to make us feel good. We can create those moments, too. Letting someone with two items go ahead of us in the supermarket queue, holding the lift for a stranger, or offering a genuine smile costs very little, yet it can make a difference to someone's day. The challenge is that we're often so focused on our own plans that we overlook these opportunities for connection. When we begin to notice them, we may find that everyday life offers far more chances for kindness, joy, and human connection than we realised. And the more we recognise those moments, the more opportunities we have to pass that feeling on.

In this conversation, we explore how to appreciate the small things in life, why everyday gestures can have such a powerful effect on how we feel, and how kindness can spread from one person to the next. We also look at the small things we do for others that bring us joy, and how paying attention to these moments can change the way we experience the world around us. You don't need to make grand gestures or add another task to an already busy day. Sometimes, a little more attention to the people around you is enough to begin creating a ripple effect of your own.

Work With Muneeza

Sometimes, we know we want to respond differently, but in the moment, our usual reactions take over. We get caught up in our own urgency, become frustrated with the people around us, or find ourselves reacting in ways that don't reflect the person we want to be. Understanding why this happens is important, but knowing why doesn't always change what happens next.

Through somatic coaching, I help you work with your emotional triggers in real time, so you can begin to change these automatic responses rather than simply trying to think your way out of them. By recognising what's happening in your body and exploring the patterns underneath your reactions, you can develop greater choice in how you respond to everyday situations, your relationships, and yourself.

If you're ready to make meaningful changes to the patterns that keep repeating, book a free 15-minute consultation to explore working together.
